Meditation on Surrender (Serenity Prayer)

meditations Jun 07, 2024

Most of us understand the benefits of meditation, focusing our mind on the present moment to gain clarity and inner peace. However, I’ve found particular mediations are worth repeating. I’ve always enjoyed the Serenity Prayer:

"God (or your higher power), grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

Serenity: Seeking peace and tranquility. It's a request for a calm and composed state of mind.

Accept the Things I Cannot Change: Resignation but about personal empowerment. It's a reminder to accept those aspects of life beyond our control. It encourages us to let go of futile efforts to change unchangeable things, such as the past or the actions of others, and focus on what we can change.

Courage to Change the Things I Can: Find the courage to make positive changes in areas you can control. It's a call to take responsibility for one's choices.

Wisdom to Know the Difference: The prayer recognizes the crucial role of discernment in our lives. This wisdom is a nice-to-have and an essential tool for making effective decisions and navigating life's challenges with clarity.

The Serenity Prayer promotes surrendering what cannot be changed and focusing on where one can make a difference. It's not exclusively religious, and many people of various beliefs find value in its message of acceptance, courage, and wisdom as they navigate life's challenges, including addiction recovery.

Practice a meditation on surrender. Allow yourself to let go and trust in a power greater than yourself.
